Electrical fault finding, Luton: the diagnostic side of a complete heating & cooling engineer.
Electrical fault finding, Luton and beyond: my core trade is heating, cooling, heat pumps and refrigeration, and I trained in the electrical side to be a more complete engineer at it. Most faults on modern heating and cooling kit are electrical or control faults — so I carry the full test equipment to find them, integrate heating controls properly, and run EICRs and PAT testing for landlords. I’ll wire and connect the equipment that needs it, but I’m not a general installation electrician and I’ll always say so up front.
Where the electrical skill earns its place
Fault finding & diagnostics
Tripping circuits, intermittent faults, dead sockets, suspect wiring — I trace the problem to its source rather than swapping parts on a hunch. The same skill is exactly why I’m good at diagnosing my core work: a large share of faults on a boiler, a heat pump, an air conditioning unit or refrigeration system are electrical or control faults, not mechanical ones.
To find them I carry proper test equipment — leakage current testers, thermal imaging, clamp meters and the rest — so I can measure what’s actually happening rather than guess. It’s the difference between a confident diagnosis and a parts-swapping bill.
Heating controls & integration
I integrate heating controls properly with the rest of the system. The brand I stand by is Heatmiser — it keeps working whether or not your internet does, which matters when a cloud-only control loses its connection. I’ll also work with controls you already have, and with KNX where a property uses it.
Inspection & testing — EICR & PAT
Full EICRs (Electrical Installation Condition Reports) for landlords, homebuyers and homeowners, plus PAT testing for businesses, landlords and rental properties — with proper certification. Part of the compliance schedule on my Commercial & Regulated page.
Wiring & connecting equipment
I’ll wire and connect the equipment that needs it — an electric shower, an EV charge point, an immersion heater, a booster pump, a new air conditioning unit or heat pump, and so on. If a piece of kit I’m fitting needs a supply or connecting properly, that’s part of the job. What I don’t do is the general installation side — see below.
Lightning protection testing
Periodic inspection and testing of existing lightning protection systems, with certification.
The certification behind the work
- 18th Edition of BS 7671 — the current UK Wiring Regulations
- Inspection, testing and certification — Level 3 Awards in initial verification, periodic inspection and in-service testing (PAT), plus a Level 2 Certificate in fundamental inspection and testing
- Building Regulations for electrical installations in dwellings — Level 3 Certificate
- Management of electrical equipment maintenance — Level 3 Award
- Lightning protection systems — Certificate of Achievement in inspection and testing
- Combined Heat and Power — training plus practical experience servicing diesel CHP generators
What’s outside my scope — and how I handle it
I’m straight about where I fit. I’m not a general installation electrician — I don’t take on rewires, new lighting circuits, or wiring out a whole floor or house in a refurbishment, and I’m not NICEIC or NAPIT registered. What I do is the diagnostic and controls side, the testing (EICR and PAT), and wiring and connecting the equipment that needs it. For work that’s notifiable under a Competent Person scheme, or a full consumer-unit (fuse board) change, I’ll tell you up front and either work alongside a registered colleague who certifies it, or point you to someone I trust — so you get the right outcome and the right paperwork, without me pretending to a registration I don’t hold.
Talk to the engineer.
An electrical fault you can’t pin down, a heating or cooling system misbehaving, an EICR or PAT for a rental or care home, or heating controls done properly — call. Phone advice is free, and I’ll tell you straight if a job needs the registered-colleague route. Full range of services on my Building Services page.
